4,000 public watch hours in the last 12 months is the requirement that stops most channels. Here's how to get there faster.

Understand what counts

  • Only public videos count. Unlisted, private and deleted videos don't.
  • Shorts views don't count towards watch hours. There's a separate 10M Shorts views route instead.
  • Live stream replays count once they're saved as public videos.
  • It's a rolling 12-month window, so old hours expire.

Upload longer videos

A 25-minute video watched halfway earns more hours than a 6-minute video watched fully. Podcast-style talks, full tutorials, gameplay sessions and study-with-me videos are watch-hour machines.

Go live, then keep the replay

A 2-hour live with 30 viewers who stay 40 minutes each is 20 hours, from one session. Do it weekly.

Build playlists that autoplay

Group videos so one ends and the next starts. Name playlists the way people search: "Class 12 Physics Full Course Hindi".

Use end screens and cards

Point every video to the next one. Keeping viewers on your channel is the whole game.

Watch-time packages

If you've got good content and just need to cross the line, YouTube watch time packages add public hours to a long video:

  • Upload a video of 60+ minutes (some packages accept 35–40 minutes).
  • Keep it public and don't delete it afterwards.
  • 1,000 quantity = 1,000 hours, delivered at 100–600 hours a day.

Important: YouTube still reviews the whole channel before approving monetisation. Reused content, copyright issues or a channel with only one video won't pass, whatever the numbers say.
