What's a Good Instagram Engagement Rate in India?
How to calculate engagement rate, typical numbers for Indian accounts by follower size, and what brands consider healthy.

Engagement rate is the number brands care about most, more than follower count.
How to calculate it
Engagement rate = (average likes + average comments) ÷ followers × 100
Take your last 10–12 posts, average the likes and comments, and divide by followers. Or use our free engagement rate calculator.
Typical ranges for Indian accounts
- Under 5k followers: 4–8% is normal; under 2% looks weak.
- 5k–20k: 2.5–5%.
- 20k–100k: 1.5–3.5%.
- 100k–1M: 1–2.5%.
- 1M+: 0.5–2%.
Reels-first accounts often see lower like-based engagement but much higher views, so brands increasingly look at average reel views ÷ followers too.
Why bought followers can hurt this
If you go from 5k to 25k followers and your posts still get 200 likes, your engagement rate drops from 4% to 0.8%, and an agency will spot it instantly. If you add followers, add likes and views in proportion.
How to raise it organically
- Ask questions in captions.
- Reply to every comment in the first hour.
- Use carousels for saves.
- Use story polls daily.
- Remove obviously dead followers occasionally (accounts with no picture or posts).
